(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 16 - Italy's Supreme Court on Wednesday overturned an appeal court ruling against two young Americans for killing a Carabinieri police officer while on vacation in the Italian capital in July 2019 and ordered a new trial.
The court annulled the 24-year-sentence handed down to Finnegan Lee Elder and the 22-year sentence handed down to Gabriel Natale Hjorth in March 2022 in relation to the murder of Mario Cerciello Rega with 11 stab wounds and assault against his partner at the end of a chain of events sparked by a drugs deal that went wrong.
Now the Supreme Court has asked the second-instance tribunal in Rome to re-examine the case in relation to alleged aggravating circumstances and the existence of the crime of resisting a public official in the case of Elder and to the charge of conspiracy to commit murder for Hjorth.
In March 2022 the Rome appeal court reduced the initial terms of the two men respectively from life imprisonment and 24 years.
