'Beware of gypsies' says Rome metro announcer

Personal initiative says transport co, culprit to be disciplined

(ANSA) - ROME, MAR 11 - A Rome metro worker is set for disciplinary action after making a tannoy announcement warning passengers to hold on to their bags and wallets for fear of thieving Romany.
"Beware of gypsies, beware of gypsies" said the unnamed announcer over the communications system, alerting users to what is often seen as a traditional peril on the Italian capital's public transport system.
Journalist and writer Francesca Mannocchi tweeted that she had heard the announcement at a Metro C stop and wanted to know what Rome's centre-left Democratic Party (PD) Mayor Roberto Gualtieri thought about it.
Roman public transport company ATAC said it had immediately identified the author of the "discriminatory and offensive" announcement.
Stressing that it was not a recorded message, ATAC said "this was a personal initiative which the company deems unacceptable".
The culprit, it said would be subjected to "a disciplinary measure". (ANSA).
