(ANSA) - PALERMO, JAN 17 - Mafia boss Matteo Messina Denaro,
who was arrested on Monday after 30 years on the run, is
seriously ill with cancer, an oncologist who examined him said
on Tuesday.
"His condition is serious," Vittorio Gebbia, the director of
oncology at the La Maddalena clinic where the 60-year-old
mobster was arrested, told Repubblica online.
"The illness has accelerated in recent months.
"I wouldn't call him a patient in a good state of health".
Messina Denaro booked his appointments at the private clinic
under the name of another person and using that person's ID
card.
Gebbia examined the former fugitive in January 2021.
Messina Denaro then started chemotherapy and underwent surgery
in May that year for liver metastasis.
Gebbia said Messina Denaro accepted his cancer diagnosis "with
great dignity".
He also said he did not display an "attitude that could raise
suspicion" about who he was. (ANSA).
