(ANSA) - ROME, FEB 16 - Italy's former super lightweight world champion Bruno Arcari has got a government stipend at the age of 80 after a campaign to help him out of financial distress, Italian Boxing Federation chief Flavio D'Ambrosi said Wednesday.
Arcari, from Atina south of Rome, held the crown from 1970 to 1973 and ended his career with a record of 70 wins in 73 bouts.
D'Ambrosi thanked Sports Undersecretary and fencing great Valentina Vezzali for her intervention in the case and said "Dear Bruno, you will soon have your just deserts for what you gave to the noble art".
Arcari, who won 38 of his fights before the limit, became a federal councillor and got a golden collar from the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) which included him on its Walk of Fame.
