Turnout down in mayor runoff races

Rome and Turin among cities back at the ballot box

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - ROME, OCT 18 - Turnout was down on the first day of voting in runoffs in local elections in many parts of Italy, including Rome, Turin and Trieste, on Sunday.
Just over 33% of eligible voters had cast their votes by the time the voting stations closed at 23:00 on Sunday, down six percentage points with respect to the first round.
Voting stations reopened at 7:00 on Monday and they will remain open until 15:00, after which the count will start.
Rome, Turin and Trieste are among 10 provincial capitals holding runoffs, in elections in 65 cities involving five million eligible voters.
The other provincial capitals are Varese, Savona, Latina, Benevento, Caserta, Isernia and Cosenza.
The centre left outdid the centre right in the first round, winning three of the six big cities up for grabs, Milan, Naples and Bologna, by getting over 50% and averting the need for runoffs. (ANSA).
