Schutzen in Alto Adige cover 600 German road signs

Protest over unresolved map issue

(ANSA) - Bolzano, August 16 - Members of the Alto Adige military folklore Schuetzen group staged a protest Friday by covering German writing on 600 road signs located at the entrances to towns. The Tyrolese patriotic militant group said it was protesting "against the injustice that began in 1922 and is still underway".
The German writing on the signs was covered with a statement in German that, when translated, reads "unofficial for 97 years".
    Prosecutors opened a probe.
The South Tyrol Schuetzen, variously translated as Marksmen or Defenders, have 5,000 or so members and are heirs to a local tradition for voluntary territorial militia dating back to the 1200s.
