BRI attention to US but 5G not in deal - Quirinale

Working lunch on 'new Silk Road' at presidential palace

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, march 13 - Presidential sources said after a working lunch on the implications of the possible Belt and Road (BRI) deal Wednesday that the mooted Italian memorandum of understanding with China is much less "weighty" than many others signed by other European countries and the Italian rules of engagement regarding accords with Beijing are much stricter and more stringent than the document of the European Union.
"Naturally we look with great attention to the US position but we recall that 5G is not in the memorandum," they said.
The US has voiced concern over Italy possibly signing up to the BRI, subbed 'the new Silk Road'.
Another 13 EU countries have already signed a memorandum of understanding on the BRI.
