(ANSA) - Cosenza, December 17 - Calabria Governor Mario Oliverio was issued an order to stay in his town of residence on Monday in relation to an abuse-of-office probe regarding public tenders, sources said. In total 16 people received notification of restrictive measures in relation to the investigation by finance police in Cosenza.
Prosecutors had requested that the governor, a member of the centre-left Democratic Party, be put under house arrest, the sources said. "Faced with these slanderous accusations, I have decided to go on hunger strike," said Oliverio.
"My life and my political and institutional work have always been based on the utmost transparency, on concrete efforts to fight crime, on honesty and respect for management of public affairs.
"Hue and cries like this are a real gift to the mafia.
"Among other things, the tender for project at the centre of the investigation was not put out during my term at the helm of the region".
