(ANSA) - Rome, October 18 - Defence Minister Elisabetta Trenta said "many of us must apologise" regarding the case of Stefano Cucchi, who died in police custody in October 2009 after an alleged police beating.
"There were many who should have seen and didn't see," Trenta said, following a meeting with Cucchi's sister, Ilaria, on Wednesday.
Cucchi thanked Trenta for making her "feel welcomed by the State after many years", after a long follow-up phone call with Trenta on Wednesday evening.
Last Thursday, one of the Carabinieri police officers on trial in relation to Cucchi's death pointed the finger at two other cops accused of the beating that allegedly led to the fatality. Francesco Tedesco, who is accused of involuntary manslaughter in the case, will be asked to repeat his charges against Raffaele D'Alessandro and Alessio Di Bernardo in a hearing by the end of January.
