Genoa decree ready says Toninelli

Rome in talks with EC to assign project without tender

(ANSA) - Rome, September 21 - Transport and Industry Minister Danilo Toninelli said Friday that his decree for Genoa following last month's bridge-collapse disaster in which 43 people died "is ready". "It will be published in the Official Gazette in the next few hours," said Toninelli, a member of the ruling 5-Star Movement (M5S).
He added that the government was in talks with the European Commission for permission to award the contract to build the viaduct that will replace the collapsed Morandi Bridge directly without a tender. He said he wanted the reconstruction to "have the stamp of the State without a tender that would allow (highways company) Autostrade (per l'Italia) to rebuild it". The government has said that, while Autostrade must pay for the new bridge, it does not want the company involved in the construction as it failed to prevent the August 14 disaster. The government has said it would like ship-builder Fincantieri to be the leading player in the reconstruction.
According to reports on Friday in Il Sole 24 Ore and Fatto Quotidiano, however, Fincantieri does not have the necessary qualifications to take on a job of this kind.
