Govt should support bid even if not putting in money - mayor

(ANSA) - Milan, September 20 - Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala said Thursday that Wednesday's presentation at the IOC's Lausanne headquarters of the Milan-Cortina d'Ampezzo bid for the 2026 Winter Olympics went "well".
Lombardy and Veneto, the regions around Milan and Cortina, this week said they would press ahead with a bid for the Games after the government announced plans for a three-way bid, also featuring Turin, had collapsed and it would no longer provide financial guarantees.
"The bid is looked upon positively and (Italian Olympic Committee) CONI will have to hold an executive meeting in the next few days," Sala said.
"There is no time to waste. "The next key appointment is at the start of October in Buenos Aires and we have to be convincing on the project, the guarantees and the support of the government, which is needed, even if not via funds".
