(ANSA) - Rome, November 10 - Roberto Spada, an Ostia clan member arrested for attacking a RAI TV crew Thursday, "commands and can give orders inside the gang", his arrest warrant says.
Spada is the brother of clan chief Carmine who runs one of the two main criminal families in the seaside town near Rome.
Fighting crime unites everyone, Rome Mayor Virginia Raggi said Friday, saying she would join Italian journalists union FNSI in Ostia on November 16 to protest against Spada's brutal attack on the RAI TV crew on Tuesday.
She said she would also be protesting with Ostia citizens tomorrow.
"Everyone united to say #MafiaGetOutOfRome," Raggi tweeted.
Meanwhile rightwing populist Northern League leader Matteo Salvini said he "did not want" the votes of Fascist group CasaPound, which scored an unexpectedly high 9% in Ostia's municipal elections Sunday. The RAI crew was interviewing Spada on suspected links to CasaPound when he headbutted a journalist, breaking his nose, and attacked a cameraman with a stick.
Rome's provincial public order and security committee will meet in Ostia on November 14 ahead of the run-offs in municipal elections November 19 to review security procedures for the vote in the light of recent "serious episodes", sources said Friday. As well as Spada's attack, there were other incidents of suspected intimidation ahead of last Sunday's vote.
The run-off will be between representatives of the centre right and the anti-establishment 5-Star Movement.
