(ANSA) - Rome, April 21 - The Video Assistant Referee (VAR)
will start helping tricky calls in Serie A at the start of next
season, Italian referees' chief Marcello Nicchi said Friday.
This will be a year ahead of what had previously been expected,
Nicchi said. "We are just awaiting the go-ahead from the
International Board," he said. The VAR was trialled for the
first time in Italy's friendly with France in Bari on September
1. Previously VARS had been tested in dry runs without being
able to communicate with the ref. VARs will be used, if
approved, for game-changing decisions like goals, red cards,
penalties and mistaken identities.
