Homeless man accused of killing US student freed

Beau Solomon drowned in River Tiber in Rome

(ANSA) - Rome, December 2 - A homeless man accused of killing American student Beau Solomon by pushing him into the River Tiber in Rome on the night between June 30 and July 1 is to be released from jail, a judge ruled on Friday. Prosecutors had opposed the request from the defence team of Massimo Galioto. Solomon, a promising young American football college player at the University of Wisconsin, died a few hours after arriving in Rome and spending the night in one of the Italian capital's pubs.
The development comes after Galioto's girlfriend and another witness were questioned this week.
Doubts about accusations made by Pennacchioli emerged during the screening of closed-circuit images of an alleged row between Galioto and Solomon before the latter fell into the water. The woman failed to identify Galioto as the person arguing with Solomon, sources said. Galioto is accused of homicide.
