(ANSA) - Genoa, November 23 - Liguria's civil protection office on Wednesday issued a red alert for bad weather in the northwestern region starting from 21:00 Wednesday evening, covering the areas inland from Imperia, Savona and Genoa where heavy rain and storms are forecast. Schools will be closed in Genoa Thursday. From 06:00 Thursday the red alert will cover Genoa and its province and Savona and its province. An orange alert has been called from 09:00 Thursday for the area inland of Genoa and of the Gulf of Tigullio. A yellow alert has been called from 12:00 from the coast of Tigullio to the La Spezia area. Gale-force winds are forecast in some areas and seas will sweep over the coast.
The fresh alert came after violent storms caused several landslides in Genoa and the surrounding area on Tuesday and three families had to be evacuated from their homes as a precautionary measure.
Two schools were closed too and several roads were shut off to traffic, including the State highway between Arenzano and Genoa and another State highway in the province of Imperia.
Fire fighters had to intervene when a lightning bolt started a fire.
In Ventimiglia, four migrants were saved after a swell in the River Roja hit the road bridge they were living under, while a fifth migrant was swept away and was missing, presumed drowned.
