(ANSA) - Rome, August 3 - Rome Police Chief Nicolò D'Angelo has ordered the creation of a maximum-security area around the Colosseum as part of new anti-terrorism measures, ANSA sources said on Wednesday. Police will be stationed at entry check points that the public will have to pass through to gain access to the area. The area of maximum security has also been extended around St Peter's according to new anti-terrorism measures for the summer period. Security around many churches and other places of worship, including in the outskirts of the capital, has been beefed up too.
The authorities are also paying close attention to the rich programme of open-air shows and concerts that are part of Rome's annual summer programme. Shopping centres and ports, especially those where cruise tourists disembark for pay trips, are under close watch too. The programme also features a drive to clear illegal camps from the banks of the River Tiber and other areas. The Army, meanwhile, said Wednesday that 7,000 soldiers were involved in the Safe Streets programme to help the police watch over sensitive sites.
