Clinton becomes first woman White House nominee

(ANSA) - Rome, July 27 - Hillary Clinton has become the Democratic presidential nominee, making history as the first woman to be chosen by a leading political party to run for the White House.
    The former first lady, US senator and secretary of State, secured her nomination after Virginia, home state of her opponent Bernie Sanders, carried the delegate count over the 2,383-vote mark needed to clinch it at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia.
    Sanders endorsed Clinton after a close primary season, although his supporters have protested against his backing with a few dozens staging a sit-in outside the Convention's hall. Former President Bill Clinton gave a very personal speech to support his wife at the convention, saying she was the ''best darn change-maker'' he has ever met in his life.
    Meanwhile reports have suggested that the FBI suspects that Russian government hackers breached the Democratic National Committee's networks and stole emails posted to WikiLeaks on Friday.
    The theory that Moscow has orchestrated the leaks to benefit Donald Trump - who has repeatedly praised Russian President Vladimir Putin and questioned NATO's role - is reportedly gaining momentum within the administration of President Barack Obama due to the timing of the leaks.
    Putin has also praised the Republican nominee.
