Station masters in Andria and Corato

(ANSA) - Trani, July 14 - The station masters in the Puglia towns of Andria and Corato, Vito Piccarreta and Alessio Porcelli, are under investigation in the probe into Tuesday's train crash that killed 23 and will be questioned in the upcoming days, judicial sources said Thursday. They are the only persons under investigation, they said. The crash happened when two trains travelling in opposite directions were somehow let onto a stretch of single track at the same time, and collided head-on just after a bend.

Piccarreta made a mistake in letting a train onto a single track towards Corato instead of waiting for two trains to arrive from there, prosecutors said. Investigators are trying to establish whether Piccarreta knew the trains were coming.
