Situation running up to collapse

(ANSA) - Florence, May 27 - Images from international satellites will be used to probe the causes of the huge sinkhole that opened up on Florence's Arno embankment near Ponte Vecchio on the night of May 24-25, Florence University researcher Nicola Casagli said Friday. Casagli is already using radar similar to that used after the Costa Concordia disaster to monitor underground movements in the area. He said the analysis of the satellite images should be completed Saturday. The 200m sinkhole is believed to have been caused by the rupture of two water pipes.
