Barilla urges sustainable development in Earth Day appeal

Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition (BCFN) book says sustainable development starts at the table and daily food choices

(ANSA) - Rome, April 21 - Sustainable development starts at the table and daily food choices, the Barilla Center for Food & Nutrition (BCFN) foundation said on Thursday. At a conference organized on the eve of Earth Day and the signing of the historic Paris agreement on global warming on Friday, the Foundation looked at the achievements and challenges in the creation of a development model that is in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, with a specific focus on food production and the impact of our daily food choices on health and the environment. The global population is set to exceed nine billion by 2050, while the demand for food will rise by 56% over the same period.
In this scenario, keeping the global temperature rise to less than two degrees Celsius as established during last December's COP21 climate conference in Paris might seem difficult. However, BCFN argues that this does not have to be the case. The event included presentation of an updated version of the volume "Eating Planet: Food and Sustainability: creating our future," prepared by BCFN and published by Edizioni Ambiente, which aims to direct choices towards a system that is more sustainable for human health and the planet.
