(ANSAmed) - Rome, April 19 - "Compared to last year, this year there has been a 4.7% increase in migrant arrivals. We are therefore not in an emergency and we cannot say that there has been a collapse in the reception system". This is how Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano described the migrant situation in Italy during a programme on Canale 5.
"The root of the problem is Libya and on Friday I will meet the interior minister of the north African country to work together to ensure there are checks at the border," he said. "The Libyan government has only been installed for two weeks and time is needed for the country to stabilise. Collaboration with them could be a fundamental turning point".
