Tarcisio Bertone, former Vatican secretary of state, on Thursday
denied any wrongdoing in connection with the alleged funding of
renovations at his penthouse apartment by a foundation linked to
the Bambin Gesù pediatric hospital in Rome.
"(The cardinal) reiterates he never indicated or authorized
the Bambin Gesù Foundation to make any payment in relation to
the apartment that he occupies and which is the property of the
Governorate," his lawyer Michele Gentiloni Silverj said in a
statement.
Earlier in the day the Vatican confirmed media reports that
two former hospital managers are under investigation for
misappropriation, following revelations contained in a
controversial exposé published last autumn by L'Espresso
journalist Emiliano Fittipaldi.
