Parents angry at alleged Father's Day move at Milan school

Focus on race so as not to upset children of same-sex parents

(ANSA) - Milan, March 14 - Parents of children at a pre-school in Milan were up in arms on Monday over the alleged decision to replace traditional learning activities dedicated to Fathers' day on March 19 with a programme on race and racial differences.
The change has been made to avoid offending the sensibilities of children at the school who live with homosexual or lesbian parents, critics claim. The school has refused to comment on the reports. Meanwhile, Milan executive councillor for education Francesco Cappelli has described the claims as an "exaggeration". The teachers "have full autonomy in interpreting certain anniversaries, in agreement with the families. The decision (to ask the children to prepare a card for the occasion with a letter) was taken in order to highlight spontaneity," Cappelli said. Centre-right politicians in Milan reportedly criticised the move.
