Italian travel index stable despite terrorist fears

Italians afraid to go to France, Middle East

(ANSA) - Rome, February 5 - An index measuring Italians' propensity to travel remained stable at 59 points in January 2016 over the previous month in spite of fears of terrorism, according to a survey released Friday by Confturismo tourist operators association.
The index increased by two points over the same month last year. However, one-third of Italians surveyed said they are afraid to travel abroad, especially due to recent terrorist attacks in Istanbul and Jakarta.
ISIS claimed responsibility for both the January 10 attack in Turkey, which killed 10 people - many of whom were German tourists - as well as the January 14 attack in Indonesia, in which one Canadian and one Indonesian civilian lost their lives, along with five of the attackers.
Those surveyed said they most fear traveling to France, the Middle East, and Turkey, but half of the respondents said they also think a terrorist attack could happen in Italy.
