Italian researchers launch hyper-memory study

Findings could help improve therapy for dementia

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, February 4 - Italian scientists are searching for people with hyper-memory to take part in a study aimed at understanding more about memory and developing new therapy for conditions such as dementia.
Researchers have already identified three people in Italy with the condition, who can remember details of almost every day of their life. Most people only recall significant days of their life in vivid detail.
The study will use magnetic resonance techniques to try to learn more about the condition and see if the neural areas of the sections of the brain tasked with memory work differently from those in average people. Starting this week, the tests will involve asking subjects to recall what they did on various dates while the activity of three neural areas of their brain are monitored.
The unprecedented study will be conducted by researchers at the Universities of Rome La Sapienza, Perugia, and the Superior Institute of Health in Rome.
They aim to test a group of at least 6-8 people with hyper-memory before publishing results.
