(ANSA) - Rome, January 15 - Italy on Friday deployed four AMX attack aircraft at its base in the western Sicilian city of Trapani. The defence chiefs of staff said the decision was taken "following the recent developments in the area of the countries of North Africa and the consequent deterioration of the security conditions". The so-called Ghibli planes will be used for reconnaissance purposes and not for bombing, to monitor the situation in North Africa, military sources said.
The AMX is a ground-attack aircraft for battlefield interdiction, close air support and reconnaissance missions.
