Italy greenhouse gas emissions fell 16% between 1990-2013

Decline due to energy consumption reduction, recession

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, November 23 - Greenhouse gas emissions in Italy declined by the equivalent of 84 million tonnes of CO2 between 1990 and 2013, falling from 521 to 437 million, a fall of 16.1%, the ISPRA institute said Monday.
The reduction is due to a decline in energy consumption due to the economic recession, especially in 2008, as well as to relocation of industries and growth in the use of renewable energy sources as well as more efficient use of energy.
Methane (CH4) and N20 emissions declined by 18.3% and 29.6% respectively over the same 23 year period.
