Foreign students 9.2% of school population says ministry

Albania, Morocco, Romania top three countries of origin

(ANSA) - Rome, November 23 - There were 805,800 foreign students in Italian schools in the 2014-2015 academic year, the education ministry said Monday.
    Students born in Italy of foreign parents make up 51.7% of the total foreign student population, which in turn makes up 9.2% of the total school population.
    The number of foreign students is on the rise in elementary and secondary schools and declining in nursery and middle schools.
    Albania, Morocco and Romania are the top three countries of origin, the ministry said.
    The wealthy northern Lombardy region hosts 201,633 foreign students or 25% of the overall total.
    Of those who enroll in university, nearly 20% of foreign students matriculate in economics and statistics, followed by engineering at 17% and languages at 13.2%, the ministry said.
