(ANSA) - Brussels, November 13 - Italian Soccer Federation (FIGC) President Carlo Tavecchio on Thursday night laid a wreath at the stand at Brussels' Heysel stadium where 39 mostly Juventus fans died ahead of the 1985 European Cup final against Liverpool.
"May the memory of that night always stay alive," Tavecchio said as he paid tribute along with the son of one of the victims, Andrea Lorentini.
Italy play world No.1-ranked side Belgium in Brussels Friday evening.
before the match the national team and Juventus will lay flowers at the plaque at the King Baudouin Stadium recalling the Heysel Stadium disaster.
Italy will also symbolically retire the number 39 shirt - a number never used as squads go up to 23 - and there will be a pause in the 39th minute of Friday's match to remember the victims of crowd trouble.
