Audit Court points to problems in religion tax payment

Auditor complains of lack of oversight, possible discrimination

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) - Rome, November 2 - Italy's Audit Court on Monday pointed to problems in the 8x1,000 contribution system, which enables taxpayers to divert a slice of their taxes to the religion of their preference. The Catholic Church is chosen by around 80% of Italian taxpayers to get 0.8% ('eight per thousand') from their annual income and it will receive around one billion euros as a result this year.
