(ANSA) - Messina, October 6 - A landslide blocked the A18
Messina-Catania motorway in Sicily Tuesday.
The slide occurred early Monday morning at Letojanni about
40 kilometres southwest of Messina.
It may have been caused by some unauthorised digging work
on the mountainside overlooking the motorway, local sources
said.
On Tuesday afternoon the seaside carriageway was opened up
to traffic in both directions but the mountainside carriageway
was still blocked, with tail-backs stretching for miles.
