(ANSA) - Geneva, September 29 - Over half a million migrants and refugees have made the sea crossing to Europe since the start of the year, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said Tuesday.
Latest figures put the number of registered arrivals at 522,134, of which the vast majority - 388,324 - have arrived in Greece.
By comparison 130,891 have arrived in Italy and 2,819 in Spain. The sea crossing in the Central Mediterranean is by far the most dangerous, with 2,691 registered deaths or missing persons out of a total of 2,829 since the start of the year.
However there has been a growing number of fatal incidents in the Aegean in recent weeks, IOM said.
