Anti-mafia chief agrees Camorra 'integral part' of Naples

Reality must be faced to combat crime, says Roberti

(ANSA) - Naples, September 16 - Italy's national anti-mafia prosecutor Franco Roberti said Wednesday that he agreed with veteran politician Rosy Bindi's assertion that the Camorra is an "integral part" of Naples. The comments by Bindi, the head of Italy's anti-mafia commission and a lawmaker for Premier Matteo Renzi's centre-left Democratic Party, prompted an angry reaction from officials in the southern city, who argued the crime syndicate involved only a relatively small minority. "In the past I called the Camorra an integral part of Neapolitan society," Roberti told the anti-mafia commission.
    "If we don't look this reality in the face, if we continue with denial, we cannot prepare the structural interventions needed (to combat the Camorra)".
