(ANSA) - Syracuse, July 17 - The Italian Coast Guard on Friday heard a 10-year-old Syrian girl who suffered from diabetes has died on board a migrant boat heading to Sicily because the men piloting the boat threw a backpack containing her insulin into the sea.
The girl, who was travelling with her parents and sisters, fell into a coma during the journey and died on the boat, which was carrying more than 320 migrants.
Her father, who had protested when the backpack with her insulin was tossed away, had to throw his child's body overboard.
Diabetes is a metabolic disease. Sufferers take insulin to regulate their blood sugar levels.
