(ANSA) - Rome, July 1 - Sampdoria Chairman Massimo Ferrero said Thursday that he was misinterpreted after saying his Catania counterpart Antonio Pulvirenti "must die". According to prosecutors, Pulvirenti has confessed to fixing five matches last season to prevent the Sicilian side being promoted from the second tier, Serie B. Ferrero said Thursday that the must-die comment was "allegorical" after it caused a stir. "Yesterday I wished for the death of sick soccer, certainly not that of a person," Ferrero, whose team finished seventh in Serie A last season and qualified for the Europa League, told ANSA. "I'm amazed and saddened (by the furore)".
