Italy given month to present plan for migrants,source-update

About 24,000 new arrivals to be transferred from Italy

(ANSA) - Brussels, May 26 - Italy will be given one month to present a roadmap on the reception of migrants, according to a legislative proposal from the European Union executive, a source told ANSA Tuesday.
The plan, expected to go before EU commissioners on Wednesday, deals with the distribution of migrants within the EU, said the source.
Italy has been on the forefront of urging redistribution of migrants across Europe as the vast majority arrive by boat on Italy's southern shores. The source said the plan should identify hotspots where migrants arrive, as well as defining how best to receive them, plus a program for security screenings coordinated with agencies including the Frontex border agency.
The plan would also involve quarterly reports by Italy and EU officials on implementation.
Irregularities, such as mistakes in screening and fingerprinting migrants, could mean the plan's suspension, said the source.
The plan would include transferring about 24,000 migrants from Italy to other parts of Europe, EU sources said last week.
The migrant issue is expected to dominate the agenda when EU leaders meet on June 26. Some European countries have been vocal in opposing the EU proposals, particularly quotas for migrant resettlement.
