Top prelate slams Italian government for 'rule by lobbies'

Bishops' conference S-G says govt cares for rich not poor

(ANSA) - Cassano allo Jonio (Cosenza), March 6 - The Secretary-General of the Italian bishops' conference accused the Italian government on Friday of being dictated by lobbies. "Italy is the country led by the lobbies. If something is left over from the lobbies, it ends up also with the people, but in substance this is, alas, our structure," said Nunzio Galantino in a homily during mass to honour the patron saint of Cassano allo Jonio, where Galantino is bishop emeritus.
"Politics does not always, or almost never, coalesces on the needs of those who can not make it. Politics supports and fattens those who are already fat enough," Galantino said.
"Certain social situations are the result of boundless selfishness. Young people are increasingly lost and short of hope, families struggling with the risk of not making it. A culture flattened by partisan interests".
