Papal summer palace at Castel Gandolfo 'to open to visitors'

Reported move follows opening of gardens in Alban Hills

(ANSA) Rome, December 19 - The Vatican has decided that the public will be able to visit the papal summer palace at Castel Gandolfo for the first time, La Repubblica newspaper reported Friday.
The decision follows the opening of the gardens at the palace to the public a year ago.
The public will be able to see all of the palace in the Alban Hills south of Rome except for the papal apartment, which is not normally used by Pope Francis since he has not taken vacations since his election last year.
The director of the papal villas, Osvaldo Gianola, said that the pontiff had decided that opening the palace to the public would help to cover the costs of the staff of 55 working at the palace and the nearby Vatican farm.
