(ANSA) - New York, December 18 - A vote Thursday in the
United Nations in support of a moratorium on the death penalty
suggested a growing global consensus against capital punishment.
The resolution in the General Assembly passed by 117 votes in
favour of a moratorium, with 38 opposed and 34 abstentions. The
United States opposed the motion, as several American states are
in favour of capital punishment. The resolution has moral weight
but no binding value and trends suggest support rising for a
moratorium.
