(ANSA) - Rome, October 31 - Burkina Faso President Blaise Compaore stood down Friday as hundreds of protesters gathered in the capital Ouagadougou following Thursday's torching of parliament and riots in which 30 people were killed.
Compaore voiced the hope there would be a peaceful transfer of power after elections within 90 days.
Earlier Friday opposition leader Zephirin Diabre urged protesters to occupy public spaces.
Demonstrators were angry Compaore had been seeking to amend the Constitution to stay in power beyond next year.
The creation of a transitional government to serve until 2015 elections was announced by army chief Gen Honore Traore, who said it would "be put in place in consultation with all parties". He also declared the dissolution of parliament.
