EU 'doing more for marines' detained by India than Italy

EC Vice-President Tajani 'uncertain' if Rome asked EU help

Redazione Ansa

(ANSA) Rome, October 3 - "Europe has done much more than the Italian Government" to help two Italian marines charged by India with killing two fishermen, European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani claimed Friday.
"Even now I have no certainty that the Italian government has made an official request to the European Union to intervene over the detention in India of the two non-commissioned officers, (Salvatore) Girone and (Massimiliano) Latorre," Tajani said.
Latorre is currently in Italy on a four-month sick leave to treat a stroke-like condition.
The former spokesman for ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi made his remarks during a 'shadow trial' staged by the Dreyfus Tribunal, an association founded to champion the rights of people who are wrongfully accused.
Tajani is one of the EC's 14 vice-presidents.
