(ANSA) - Taranto, September 15 - Italian marine Massimiliano Latorre was set to begin his rehabilitative therapy Monday after suffering a stroke-like attack on August 31 while being detained in New Delhi.
The marine has living in India with his fellow marine Salvatore Girone, detained in connection with the shooting deaths more than two years ago of two Indian fisherman.
Latorre returned to his Italian home Saturday night after India's Supreme Court allowed him a four-month leave for medical treatment with a signed pledge that he would return.
Italy has been fighting to have the two marines, who were on an anti-piracy mission at the time of the shooting in February 2012, returned home permanently.
Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini said last week that the Italian government was ready to launch an international appeal on behalf of the two marines yet at the same time Rome still had a "duty" to continue talks with New Delhi to find a political solution.
Rome has protested the many delays in the case, which has caused major diplomatic friction between the countries.
It successfully fought to ensure New Delhi took the death penalty off the table and dropped the application of a severe anti-terrorism, anti-piracy law.
