(ANSA) - Brussels, September 4 - The advocate general of the
European Court of Justice on Thursday requested that Italy be
charged a fine of 158,000 euros a day and a lump-sum fine of 60
million euros for failing to clean up illegal waste landfill
sites.
The request came as part of closing remarks in a case
pitting the country against the European Commission (EC) in
Brussels.
The EC took Italy to court for failing to comply with a
2007 ruling ordering it to clean up hundreds of illegal rubbish
dumps, some of them containing hazardous waste.
