(ANSA) - Rome, July 4 - Italian Premier Matteo Renzi said at
a Friday press conference in Rome that Italy's Mediterranean
search-and-rescue operation Mare Nostrum will continue but will
require European support.
Speaking at a press conference with European Commission
chief José Manuel Barroso, Renzi said "Mare Nostrum continues
because a civilized population does not set adrift a boat with
children, but saves them", Renzi said, adding that Italy needs
"reinforcement" from Frontex, the EU border-control agency.
"It's not possible that in 2014 a ship full of children is
allowed to capsize because we don't know whose jurisdiction it
is", the premier said.
