(ANSA) - Rome, May 25 - Chocolate magnate Petro Poroshenko
on Sunday claimed victory in Ukraine's presidential elections
after exit polls suggested he had taken over 55% of the vote to
prevail in the first round.
Poroshenko has pledged to pursue closer ties with the
European Union and restore peace in eastern regions where
government forces are in conflict with pro-Russian separatists.
The separatists severely disrupted voting in many parts of
the east, including the city of Donetsk, where no polling
stations were open.
