(ANSA) - Caserta, May 20 - Paolo Romano, the speaker of the
Campania regional assembly, was put under house arrest on
Tuesday on suspicions of attempted corruption.
Romano, who is a candidate in Sunday's European Elections
for the New Centre Right (NCD) party - a junior partner in
Premier Matteo Renzi's coalition government - is suspected of
trying to exert undue pressure in appointments with the Caserta
health authority.
Parties from various parts of Italy's political spectrum
have been hit by a long string of corruption scandals in recent
years, contributing to growing skepticism about the ruling class
and the rise of anti-establishment 5-Star Movement (M5S), which
is second in the polls ahead of Sunday's vote.
