(ANSA) - Rome, April 11 - Italia police on Friday bust a
mafia waste-trafficking gang in southern Italy.
Police said they had arrested 14 managers, partners and
hauliers in waste-management firms on the borders of Campania
and Puglia.
The Black Land operation took place around the cities of
Foggia, Caserta, Avellino and Benevento.
The Neapolitan Camorra mafia has made huge profits and
wreaked enormous environmental damage disposing of toxic waste
around Naples, where cancer rates have spiralled in the
so-called Terra dei Fuochi (Land of Fires).
So called because of its burning trash piles, the area was
once one of the loveliest in Italy and in ancient times the
heart of the Romans' Campanian bread basket.
The Italian government has sent in the army to try to help
clean it up.
