Italy in running for 20-mn-euro EU anti-terrorism 'hub' (ANSA) - Brussels, January 15 - The European Commission is allocating 20 million euros over 2014-2020 for the creation of a new European ''hub'' against terrorism, that will monitor, study and coordinate anti-terrorism efforts, sources close to the European Commission (EC) said on Wednesday.

Italy is among a number of countries to express interest in hosting the centre, the sources said. Part of the funds are to be used for the Radicalisation Awareness Network (RAN), an EC-supported group of frontline people in direct contact with targeted individuals or vulnerable groups who work to stop them from getting involved in extremist activities.

The dossier regarding the new entity will be discussed at an informal meeting of European interior ministers in Athens January 23-24.
