The project in Rome's Flaminio district near the Parco della Music auditorium and the Maxxi museum of modern art, will stretch over about 51,000 meters and include a science museum, about 200 private homes and 70 rent-controlled social housing units.
Space will also be provided for such public facilities as a library and a medical clinic.
The project will involve the city of Rome, the national economy ministry and other Italian agencies including a real estate fund managed by the publicly owned Cassa Depositi e Prestiti.
"By using an abandoned site of the State, we can do all of this that will give benefits to the State, the capital (city) and its citizens," said Marino.
