No amnesty for financial crimes, says justice minister

Cancellieri says no amnesty for Berlusconi (ANSA) - Rome, October 8 - Suggestions of an amnesty for ex-premier Silvio Berlusconi, convicted of tax fraud, is a "false" idea, Italy's justice minister said Tuesday.

Annamaria Cancellieri denied suggestions from the 5-Star Movement (M5S) that an amnesty was being considered for Berlusconi, who appears likely to lose his seat in the Senate following his definitive conviction in August.

Berlusconi and supporters in his People of Freedom (PdL) party have been fighting hard to save his Senate position.

But Cancellieri said that while Parliament can decide when amnesty might be allowed, it would not be permitted in cases of financial crimes.
